Service Learning

‘This experience has revived my passion for community engagement. Through this program I have gained skills to make me a better leader, communicator, and a better server to my community.’

– Alexis, Indiana State University, USA

‘It was a one of a kind experience and I am very grateful I received this opportunity. It is something I will remember forever’.

– Olivia, Indiana State University, USA

‘Indiana State University’s service-learning partnership with the IHS was a model of how service-learning should work.  Our projects were planned in collaboration with a diverse group of community partners, the work was meaningful and well-designed, and the students were deeply immersed in the community.  The balance of cultural and heritage programming with the service work was just right… it is one of the finest community partners we have worked with over the past decade. We look forward to continuing our partnership with them for years to come.’

– Dr Nancy Rogers, Vice President for University Engagement and Dr Linda Maule, Dean of the University College, Indiana State University.

Customised Programs

‘Working with the Irish Heritage School has been an extremely positive and productive collaboration for Meath County Council. The IHS have a proven track record for delivering projects, are truly experts in their field and their can-do attitude has transformed a site neglected for many centuries into an award winning community-driven project recognised both nationally and internationally. They are excellent communicators and can engage students and the public in a participative and engaging manner. They have built very strong community relationships and have gained local respect and support in recognition of this effort. They are experienced in tailoring bespoke programs, specific to the requirement of individual institutions.’

– Dr Loreto Guinan, Heritage Officer for Meath County Council, Ireland

‘This is my second time coming back to the IHS and I have to say the experience I gathered is invaluable to me. As someone who is pursuing a career in archaeology, this internship provided the hands on training one needs in the field as well as allowing me to practice my teaching skills. The staff is incredibility knowledgeable and eager to help with any questions you might have. I highly recommend this internship!’.

– Lina Ramirez, Student in Anthropology, University of California, Los Angeles.

‘Returning as an intern helped me to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the running of an archaeological site. Teaching and supervising new students gave me further experience outside of just getting dirty in a cutting! All the staff were extremely supportive and I felt my contribution to the site was valued. Thanks for a great summer!’

– Glenn Gibney, Student in Ancient History and Archaeology, Trinity College, Dublin

‘Even though we are a fairly small college, the coordinators at IHS were eager to help create a program that suited our students’ particular curricular needs.  At every turn, IHS has been easy to work with and very accommodating.  Their deep commitment to educating students about Irish history and archaeology are evident in every conversation.

Best of all, our students returned from their summer course with great enthusiasm and a keen ability to articulate facets of Irish history and culture that they had encountered.  The program is well crafted – the hands on archaeological experience, the curriculum, the field trips, the home stays – all work together to create a unique and powerful experience for our students’.

– Dr Karen Chambers. Associate Professor and Ireland Programs Coordinator, Saint Mary’s College, Indiana

‘Maynooth University is excited to partner with the dynamic and ground-breaking IHS. The IHS provide expert knowledge about the site and were instrumental in developing new ideas to offer our students the chance to gain real, practical skills in field archaeology. The opportunity to offer a program that invites international students to work alongside our anthropology students has greatly added to our current offerings and our students had a wonderful time learning beyond the classroom and the textbook. All the IHS academics and staff provided a wonderful level of support, both academic and pastoral.‘

– Dr Kathryn Segesser, International Office of Maynooth University, Ireland
