‘Irish Heritage School Internships provide a hands-on opportunity to turn classroom knowledge into reality.’
The IHS delivers a number of heritage themed credited internships with their internship partners Learn International (a leader in international education in Ireland). Our internships are developed specifically for participants interested in learning more about their fields of study in an international environment.
All our placements are designed to adapt and meet the academic and institutional requirements of participants’ home universities, in addition to the professional and academic goals of each participant.
We typically offer eight to twelve week placements year round; shorter internships can sometimes be arranged and several are subject to seasonal restrictions, so please talk to us first about your specific requirements. We can provide both credit and non-credit options and can also provide certified work hours, placement assessments, and feedback as required, if you wish to arrange accreditation from your home institution directly . Nearly all of our programs are based within our two partner communities so you are guaranteed a warm welcome by a community that is eager to show you ‘real’ Ireland.
Below are some examples of the areas in which students can serve an internship. This list is not exhaustive, so if you do not see what you are interested in, please contact us:
- Community Archaeology
- Architectural recording
- Cultural Resource Management
- Environmental Science
- Heritage Management
- Historical Building Conservation
- Museum Studies
- Tourism (responsible tourism)
Our Internship Program includes:

Our internships can be arranged at anytime throughout the year on a rolling basis (although certain local partners and activities are only available at specific times of the year); however, there are broadly four application deadlines each year. For application please apply through our partners Learn international, or for general inquiries please contact us.
‘This is my second time coming back to the Blackfriary and I have to say the experience I gathered is invaluable to me. As someone who is pursuing a career in archaeology, this internship provided the hands on training one needs in the field as well as the opportunity to practice my teaching skills. The staff is incredibility knowledgeable and eager to help with any questions you might have. I highly recommend this internship!’
– Lina Ramirez, Student in Anthropology, University of California, Los Angeles.
‘Returning to the Black Friary as an intern helped me to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the running of an archaeological site. Teaching and supervising new students gave me further experience outside of just getting dirty in a cutting! All the staff were extremely supportive and I felt my contribution to the site was valued. Thanks for a great summer!’
– Glenn Gibney, Student in Ancient History and Archaeology, Trinity College, Dublin
